What should materials and buildings do for the planet?

Sustainable design has made enormous progress by teaching us to measure and reduce environmental harm. But reducing harm is not the same as creating benefit.

Radical Green asks what happens when we raise our expectations: when buildings don't simply consume less, but actively contribute to the environmental systems of which they are a part.

Why Radical Green?

For decades, the dominant language of sustainable design has been one of reduction. Use less energy, consume less water, emit less carbon. These objectives remain essential, and the extraordinary scale of the built environment means that even incremental improvements can produce significant benefits.

But reduction presents a conceptual problem. How close to zero is good enough?

A building that consumes half as much energy is better than one that consumes twice as much, but it might still contribute to an unsustainable planet. A material with 30 percent less embodied carbon is an improvement, but its environmental burden remains. Relative improvement can become a perpetual exercise in making damaging systems incrementally less damaging.

Radical Green begins with a more absolute proposition:

Less bad cannot be the limit of our ambition.

What if buildings could produce more energy than they consume? What if materials could store more atmospheric carbon than their construction emitted? What if existing buildings became repositories of valuable resources rather than future demolition waste? What if architecture improved habitat, supported biodiversity, and created conditions in which humans and other species could thrive?

The objective shifts from mitigation to contribution. Net-zero may appear to be the logical endpoint, but its accounting can conceal impacts outside conventional lifecycle and system boundaries. Radical Green therefore looks beyond neutrality whenever possible toward net-positive effects.

A building should not merely occupy an ecosystem. It should participate in one.
