
Challenge
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted nearly every aspect of daily life and exposed the built environment’s critical role in public health. Although people in industrialized societies spend most of their time indoors, the influence of buildings, infrastructure, and landscapes on disease transmission remains insufficiently understood. Sealed envelopes, inadequate ventilation, harmful materials, dense mobility networks, and unequal access to healthy spaces can intensify risk. Meanwhile, conventional design practices often prioritize comfort, convenience, and cost over human and ecological health. Architects, engineers, scientists, and policymakers therefore face an urgent challenge: rethinking environments that can limit communicable disease without sacrificing social connection, environmental quality, or justice.
Strategy
The Pandemic Effect establishes a broad knowledge base for understanding and improving the relationship between design and infectious disease. The book brings together concise contributions from ninety leading architects, landscape architects, designers, engineers, materials scientists, and public health experts. Organized into five chapters—Histories, Inside/Outside, Interventions, New Strategies, and The Public Realm—it examines precedents from earlier pandemics, healthier building envelopes and mechanical systems, methods for monitoring and controlling pathogens, adaptations to pandemic-influenced activities, and new approaches to cities, landscapes, and infrastructure. Collectively, these insights propose ways to transform architecture from a contributor to illness into a means of protection, resilience, well-being, and environmental remediation.
